Learning to Love Star Trek

I have to say that I have pretty much always been anti-Star Trek. Sure, there was a time when I was younger that I enjoyed watching the movies, although I can hardly remember what any of them are actually about. Somewhere around the age of 12 or 13, though - rather than growing out of things like sci-fi and comic books and the other nerdtastic things I’m still knee-deep in - I decided that I was a Star Wars guy, and that being a Star Wars guy meant hating Star Trek. I’ve been happy to do so for years, now.

Until they announced JJ Abrams as the director of the new Star Trek movie. That kind of excited me. Then there were the pictures:

Spock and Kirk

Spock and Kirk

Suddenly I understand why people might spend hours writing volumes of Spock and Kirk slash. I keep trying to tell my friends that Captain Kirk wants to marry me. Just look into his eyes. You can see it, can’t you?

Now, I could just be content to wait for the movie, and let that be the beginning of my interest. But anyone who knows me knows that it’s not in my nature. However, a decade of convincing myself that I hate Star Trek has made it hard for me to consider diving into that world.

I think, at first, I’ll stick to certain parameters, like sticking to the newly remastered episodes of the original series. Oh, and this:

Definitely this.

At this rate, I think I might actually be able to love Star Trek.
